Keeping Those Goals Alive

Wednesday, January 19, 2022 - Joe Kiedinger

We’re into the third week of January already. Can you believe it? How are those New Year’s resolutions going? It’s so tempting to let those really difficult goals drop off right now, isn’t it?

Well, I have some advice to keep your goals—whether personal or work-oriented—moving forward.

  1. If you don’t write it down, it’s not real.

You need to clarify your aspirations if you want to remember them and reach them. Rather than an occasional thought popping into your head, “Oh, I should be ordering a salad right now to help with my weight loss goal,” scrawl your goal out loud and proud everywhere you spend time.

Place a giant note next to your computer at work, on your fridge at home, on your dash in the car and set reminders on your phone.

And make those goals specific! “Read more books” isn’t nearly as motivating as “Read one leadership book by the end of each month.”
  2. Are we being realistic?

Take a look at your current goals. Are they truly attainable considering your lifestyle? Say you aim to lose 50 pounds this year. Ask yourself how realistic your goal is and set one that you’ll actually be able to achieve. Fifty pounds might be pushing it, but 25? That you can do!

Chunk that attainable goal up into smaller steps that help you get there: lose 2 pounds per month, eat three meatless/low-carb/low-cal meals (insert your diet of choice here) each week and exercise three times this week. Now, that’s doable.
  3. Now we’re trackin’!

Consider using a tracking tool, like Trackify, which is an add-on for our Dignify subscribers which motivates by tracking company-wide, departmental and personal goals and initiatives. This feature allows leaders and associates to set scheduled achievement levels, make notes, add files and check progress at a glance—helping companies and individuals prioritize what is often first to hit the backburner.
