How to Lower Turnover in Today’s Age of Low Unemployment

Wednesday, September 19, 2018 - Joe Kiedinger

Every generation believes that theirs is the best. Talk to any person from any generation and they will brag about how they learned how to navigate life—while the other generations just don’t get it!

I feel the Millennials are teaching us how to lead. Ask any manager in the hospitality business and they will tell you, it’s nearly impossible to find good help! Actually, that sentiment crosses all types of industries. So, what can you do to put your arms around this very serious threat?

I say, let’s take this largest and least experienced group called the Millennials and learn to play their game. Let’s turn the tables on them! How? Get after your culture of communication.

They say, “I quit because they don’t get me.” Ok, let’s get to know them! Have regular one-on-one meetings with them. Arrange for monthly feedback sessions.

They say that the Gen Xers just don’t get how things run today. OK, let’s play a trick on them: let’s create small groups, share your burden of what you want improved and then, let them figure it out. Let’s celebrate their successes and allow them the grace to fail. They’ll make it right based on what they learned.

Here’s the deal. If you’re a leader today, it’s time to make a change. How it used to be isn’t how it is today. This new workforce wants purpose in their life. They crave connection. They like accountability and being allowed to contribute to the conversation.

The day of “do it or else” is over. Let’s raise our game, so we can play their game!
