How Did We Forget This?

Imagine yourself under the bright lights, reclined in a dental office chair, mouth open wide. You’re about to have a filling done. As your dentist leans in to inject you with a syringe of Novocain in hand, she chuckles and says, “I don’t technically have a degree in dentistry, but I’ll do the best I can.”
The shock. The vulnerability. The fear you must have in that moment. As a patient, we expect that our medical providers have proper training so they can fulfill their role adequately. So, why don’t we expect the same from our leaders in all areas of business?
I can’t tell you how many companies we’ve worked with where leaders tell me they’re trying to do their best, but they don’t have any formal training in how to lead.
We need to teach leadership, my friends. It’s a skill, not an inherent ability.
