You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch!

Wednesday, December 7, 2016 - Joe Kiedinger

How positive are you at work? How positive is your culture? Would your colleagues call you a Grinch? If there is one thing I’ve learned over my career, what you say becomes your day. Do you look at difficult times as challenges or problems? Name it a challenge, it can be overcome, label it a problem and solutions become fuzzy.

The brain is 7% more creative in positive energy than in neutral or stressed (Shawn Achor, 2011). Doctors are 19% more likely to make a correct diagnosis when their brain is in positive versus neutral or stressed.

Therefore, leaders have a choice. You are the ones who dictate how quickly challenges can be overcome It’s all in how you react to it. Be careful not to label things as bad. Events have no meaning, only the meaning you label it.

I have to believe that people who live their lives with this belief are more successful than those who do not. Negativity kills the human spirit. It drowns out any chance for hope and never helps any situation.

Here’s to the glass being half full, here’s to making lemonade out of lemons! To those who lead people and families by looking for what’s good, you are truly making the world a better place. Let’s face it, life is filled with challenges. Your character is defined by how you react to them!
