The Purpose of Purpose

Tuesday, March 10, 2020 - Joe Kiedinger

Have you identified your company’s true purpose?  What is a purpose?

In its simplest form, your purpose is a combination of why your company exists and what each employee is called to do every day.  For example, Prophit Co. exists to give people credit for what they do because of who they are.  Each day, our employees are called on to inspire and empower businesses to grow.

Having a purpose also means establishing a set of core values for your company and employees to live by that are simple and easy to remember.

Prophit Co.’s core values are:

  • Dignity—Agape, choose to respect
  • Perseverance—We can accomplish more together
  • Unique—Think differently
  • Courageous—Bold humility
  • Process—The system is the solution

We live by these values every day.

It’s extremely important to identify your purpose because everything your company does should begin and end with that purpose.  It serves as your organization’s true north and keeps your goals and decisions consistent.  How?  Everything and everyone are kept accountable to the same thing—you guessed it, your purpose.

And there is great power in aligning your team around that purpose.   Your employees have clarity because you have clearly identified goals and initiatives that drive your organization forward.

Identifying a clear purpose isn’t just about your organization, either. It’s also about your employees.  Every employee deserves to know how they fit into their organization’s purpose.  After all, people spend nearly one third of their lives at work—shouldn’t they know why the work they do is important?   Whether you already have a purpose and a plan or you’re just starting out on your journey, just make sure you and your organization are given credit for what you do because of who you are.
