The Magic of Two

Wednesday, June 10, 2015 - Joe Kiedinger

The simple magic of two. Two creates understanding, two is simple balance and two unites. It was a great day when my middle daughter Aria and I went up north for the weekend; just the two of us. She loves to have fun and shop. We took the doors off the Jeep Wrangler and drove around the Northwoods jamming to Jimmy Buffett and stopping at various stores in search of… whatever!

The business mentality takes on the belief that group meetings are more efficient. For example, if the manager has six people under him/her, it’s more efficient to have weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the group, than it is to meet one-on-one with all six. “We can share our thoughts and get moving in 45 minutes. If I met with each person for 45 minutes it would be a waste of time,” is the belief of most managers.

Having one-on-one time is not only efficient, it’s necessary to truly connect and understand the other person. Too many times in group meetings information gets misunderstood. By keeping it one-on-one, you make it about the person you’re with, not a group dynamic. I’ve been asked by friends, “Who is your favorite employee?” I tell them, “It’s the one I’m with and talking to.” They are my sole focus at that moment. They deserve it because they’re unique and have thoughts to share and questions I need to answer.
