Reducing Pushback During Times of Change

Wednesday, March 17, 2021 - Joe Kiedinger

Our first Servant Leaders of Wisconsin (SLOW) event of the year is next week! Fan favorite Tom Thibodeau will be back to share Transitioning Through Change—Getting Through Life Quakes during this FREE virtual event at 3:30 PM CST on March 24th. Join us!

What is one thing that is inevitable, necessary and darn right scary to most people in business? Change! As a leader, you realize that in in order to remain relevant with a healthy bottom line, you need to adapt to changing times. Often, that change comes with some significant pushback.

So, how do you navigate the transition? Just like the old story about boiling frogs, the answer lies in the rate of change. As the old adage goes, if you place a frog in a pot of boiling water, it’ll just jump right out! However, if you place the frog in room-temperature water and then slowly turn the dial up on the stove, he’s unlikely to notice the change at all and will happily stay in the pot. Frog legs, anyone?

While some of your associates might be naturally wired change agents who eagerly accept your newest business adaptations, most will be hesitant when multiple changes take place in quick succession. Acknowledge their concerns and focus on communication throughout the process. Give your associates a platform to discuss their questions and concerns. An open door and an eager ear are usually all that’s needed to reach full buy-in.
