Reaching the Summit!

Wednesday, April 1, 2015 - Joe Kiedinger

I had the wonderful experience of taking my family to Colorado to go skiing at Winter Park. Growing up, my family went skiing locally every other weekend with other Green Bay families, but we never went out West (don’t worry, we were never deprived!).

I wanted to show my kids what mountains looked like and what the lack of oxygen feels like! Here are my two oldest girls joining me at the summit of one of the Winter Park Resort mountains. This is over 14,000 feet up, almost three miles above sea level. When we reached the summit they went wild! We rode the 5.5 mile ski run to the base of the hill some 11,000 feet above sea level. It took us nearly thirty minutes.

In life, there are no summits. Some people believe they exist, but they don’t. When we have a goal and we reach it, a new goal is created. Therefore, the mountain continues to climb. It’s the pursuit of the summit that is the real joy in life.

I’ve come to learn that happiness and joy must come before success. We’ve been taught that if your successful then your happy. It’s simply not true. You know people who you would deem successful who are miserable. If you can control your happiness and joy in the present then success is more open to you. Perhaps this bit of wisdom I’ve gained recently will have some meaning in your life today.

If this resonates with you, please go to Ted Talks at www.ted.com. Once there search for Shawn Achor. He is the one who opened my eyes to the role positivity takes in the journey towards success!
