Be a Mentor, Not An Instructor!
 

Something changes when you decide to approach a direct report from a mentoring perspective versus an instructor perspective. What’s the difference? Instructors see the person as an object and they ‘teach’ the object content and ‘educate’ them on how to do something. Mentors, on the other hand, take the time to get to know the person and truly make it personal. They strive to pull out that person’s best attributes and apply those talents to the job.

Have you ever had a mentor? A mentor had the ability to see what was in you before you could. He or she was strict but fair, celebrated your victories and treated you as a unique individual. The mentor holds your hand through the process of learning. This approach creates a true relationship that is built to last. When you look to make a person the best they can be, something changes. It’s all off a sudden not about you and all about them!
