Part 2 – Relationships then ROI

Wednesday, May 25, 2016 - Joe Kiedinger

A Millennial Story

My son Alex goes to school in St. Augustine, FL. He decided to work there through the summer instead of coming home. For nearly two years while attending classes, he has worked as a short order cook in a little bar/restaurant near campus. He loved the people he worked with and respected his manager, until the manager quit and a new manager was brought in to operate the business.

Alex saw how she treated and belittled his friends at the restaurant; slowly they started to quit. Finally, it was Alex’s turn to “feel her wrath.” She decided to ‘coach’ him old school style through yelling and belittlement. In the middle of her tirade, he calmly said to her, “Excuse me, I need to step outside.”

After a few minutes he returned. She continued to scream at him to which Alex replied calmly, “You have undignified me to a core, so much so that I can no longer work here.” He removed his apron and walked out.

Here is a young man that worked twenty hours a week and prepared all the meals. How much did her temper cost the owner of that establishment? Relationships are directly tied to ROI. Those managers who understand this will outperform those who strictly focus on ROI.

After leaving his former employer, he crossed the street and landed a job as a waiter and doubled his income! Go Alex!

ACTION PLAN: Be aware of how you communicate. Do you build goodwill or do you accidentally build distrust? I know I need to look myself in a mirror and ask this question often. I’m nowhere where I need to be, but I’m better than I was.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little inspiration.

Understanding where others are coming from is critical in communicating and working toward a common cause.
