It’s All a Matter of Perspective

Wednesday, April 8, 2020 - Joe Kiedinger

Now that we’re a few weeks into our “new normal,” how are you taking it? Really, take a moment and think about it honestly. Are you having mostly negative thoughts? Maybe you’re more neutral or mostly positive?

It’s easy to get sucked into a vortex of negativity and blame. We have plenty of reasons to follow that trail. But, for your own benefit, and the benefit of your family, I urge you to turn the other way. Here’s why…

Picture a ladder before you. As you stand at the bottom of it and hold the first rung you consider yourself a victim in all this. You curse everyone around you—the person at the grocery store who was not following social distancing rules, the person who was hoarding food, a leader in government or at work for being too slow to act or too stringent. At this lowest rung, you are shrouded in darkness and feel completely helpless.

Now, step up a few rungs. At the middle of the ladder you’re in a neutral spot. You can see the top of the ladder and the bottom and can understand some positives in your predicament and some negatives. You’re able to acknowledge reality and feel a little more empowered. That dark shroud has partly lifted and you see some sunlight starting to peek through.

Now, climb up to the very top of the ladder. Here, you can see far and wide. The sun pouring out golden light before you. You feel powerful, like you can do anything. You’re motivated to take action and can truly own the situation. You suddenly see new ways to bring in business and are ready to take action.

This, my friends, is the Accountability Ladder, and it shows you that it’s all a matter of perspective. When you choose to dwell in negativity and play the victim, you will limit yourself to that bottom rung. But if you choose to climb up the ladder and choose positivity and take action, you open the doors to opportunity.

Which rung would you like your family to see you on? Your staff? Your co-workers?
