How to Begin to Build a Healthy Culture

Wednesday, July 26, 2017 - Joe Kiedinger

So, you’ve heard a lot about building a healthy culture, but you don’t know where to begin? That’s what I hear a lot of when speaking about this often mysterious topic. Everyone seems to understand that a healthy company culture is imperative, but few know where to begin.

May I suggest a little one-on-one time? Presence is #2 on what leads to a happy person.

IMG_2161.jpgWhen you are truly present with another person it shows you care and are interested in their well being.

Pictured here is my youngest daughter, Amelia. We decided to drive up to the cabin, just the two of us, and spend some one-on-one time. We stayed two nights and had one full day together. This time was needed for both of us. Life is hectic, it’s important to make time.

Our employees do ‘check-ins’. It’s scheduled time between two people getting to know what is important to each person and discussing ways to better cooperate and communicate with one another.

If you want to start growing a healthy culture, ask to sit down with people, if only for 30 minutes, and get to know them. Ask them, “is there anything I should stop, continue or start doing to better support you?”

After their jaw hits the ground due to your sincere humility, listen. Listening is truly being present with someone. You will be amazed how powerful this will be for you. Culture begins with communication and the best way to communicate is one-on-one!

ACTION PLAN: Invite a person to sit down for coffee and connect in the next 14 days. Ask the question and simply listen! It doesn’t have to be complicated to get started.
