Blind Spots
Wednesday, May 9, 2018 - Joe Kiedinger
There are many obvious “known” things about a person. These could include physical characteristics like gender, hair color, or height. They also include behavioral descriptors like stubborn, happy, or enthusiastic. These things are known to both the person themselves and the people who interact with them. There are also “unknown knowns”. These are things that outside people are aware of but the person is not aware of in themselves.
Finally, there are “unknown unknowns”. These are things that both the person and others don’t know about them. Are you staying with me? This category shows its face when a person is placed in extreme conditions or circumstances. Growing your character must start with asking about the “unknown knowns”. Very few people are comfortable with this. It takes emotional intelligence to be open to this type of feedback.
Can you get comfortable learning something about yourself that could be improved? Are you okay discovering your blind spots?
