Are You Comfortable Being Uncomfortable?
Wednesday, March 6, 2019 - Joe Kiedinger
I’m embracing winter. March is the month where, for most people around here, spring fever really begins to set in. Recently, the Green Bay area has experienced a series of bitterly cold weeks along with snow, snow and more snow. Sure, I hear people complaining about it, but what good does that do? This picture indicates how our family dog is dealing with this, he just gets comfortable.
We used to have a little dog who hated going outside in the winter. She would hide under the bed and avoid the conflict. We gifted her to a family who understood this breed and could train her appropriately. Now we have Harvey. Here he is just hanging out, accepting and enjoying the long winter.
It sparked a question for me: can we be comfortable being uncomfortable? In order to reach our true potential, we’ve got to stretch. We must move ourselves to do uncomfortable things so we can become comfortable. The art of confronting reality in all situations is, let’s face it, uncomfortable. Speaking the truth to your kids, friends and employees can be uncomfortable. We are afraid of how they will react to the feedback.
However, when we don’t speak the truth the only one we’re serving is ourselves. To truly respect and love another is to speak the truth. I’ve found, when the truth is delivered in love people listen and respond favorably. They even exhibit gratitude and acceptance because of it.
I encourage you to practice being uncomfortable so you can create comfort in others.
