Be Sincere In Your Praise

Wednesday, September 25, 2019 - Joe Kiedinger

Have some thanks to share? Share it with sincerity to make a big impact. Know how people want to be praised. There are certain needs that we all have as humans: appreciation, praise, accountability and attention.

It feels good to receive a ‘good going’, but it is entirely different to tie in what a person did well because of who they are. That is giving a person dignity. Dignity is at the heart of sincere praise. It’s seeing a person for who they are and what makes them unique. For example, you may have two employees who are responsible for a similar job. How employee A completes their job will be uniquely different than how employee B completes their job. Recognize it and praise it.

Insincere praise damages relationships. Praising someone with a simple good job with nothing else supporting it, can often do more harm than good. Be genuine and recognize a person’s uniqueness. That’s the difference between a leader and a manager.

ACTION PLAN: Reflect. What makes your key people unique? The answer is in observing their behavior and making connections.
