Go Big, Then Go Home
Wednesday, February 7, 2018 - Joe Kiedinger
A great culture thrives on goals and hitting key objectives. Nobody is inspired from just being “good enough”. Everybody wants to win. Companies win when everyone is on the same page and expectations are clear.
I came up with a saying several years ago. I know I’ve written about it in a past “Wisdom on Wednesday”. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Go big or go home”. I believe this originated in the sports realm. In the business realm, I have heard—and been victim to—a philosophy that one can’t become successful unless they work crazy hours.
I’ve come to realize that successful people are productive, not busy. Do not mistake busyness with productivity. Instead, go as big as you can in the moment. Strive for excellence with whatever you’re doing. Then at the end the day, go home!
I remember hearing a story about when Stephen Spielberg asked his wife’s opinion of him starting a new film company called DreamWorks. She said, “As long as you’re home for supper, you can do whatever you want”.
Family is critical to our happiness. Our spouses and our kids need us. We also need time to decompress and be with those closest to us. It gives life balance and is healthy.
So I ask you to: Go Big, Then Go Home!
